Finally, a clear view of the 1st submarine to sink an enemy ship…

right here in South Carolina. Here is the first clear view of the CSS Hunley Submarine since it was recovered. The restoration of the submarine started in the year 2000.

The crew’s journey began on February 17th, 1864, when they achieved a maritime first by sinking the USS Housatonic. After the Hunley successfully completed its mission, the sub’s crew signaled to shore that they were on the way home and then mysteriously vanished.

Since then, the fate of the Hunley and her crew became a part of American legend and intrigue.

In August 2000, the Hunley was raised from her watery grave. The crew of the Hunley were found on board the submarine seated at their respective stations at the bottom of Charleston Harbor.

The Hunley’s eight-man crew were laid to rest next to each other in 2004-marking the last Confederate soldiers funeral and burial.
